Free tram rides idea
The Scotsman reports 'calls from the business community' for free tram rides when the system opens.
This will 'boost business' and give some payback to businesses that have struggled through the construction phase.
We believe, like the 'Free Parking' near Christmas that the 'offer' actually highlights the problem rather than alleviating it.
If the tram was really the answer to what ails the retail sector in the City, it's inaguration alone would force the dawn of a new golden age.
But it isn't, it's largely irrelevant and without a proper traffic plane, positively dangerous.
The plan is in effect a transfer of resources from the City coffers (ie including all council tax payers) to fill the tram for it;s first week or so which. traders hope, may serve to revive their fortunes.
But they should be careful what they wish for as far from huge residential areas cut off from their shops the tram also connects the large shopping centres at Hermiston Gait to the people already brought to the city centre by bus and private transport.....the line runs both ways..
